Octus to Kimmy in The Ballad of Scary Mary @ 2:10

Octus is a high-tech bio-cybernetic robot sent to Earth along with Lance to protect Princess Ilana from her war-torn planet of Galaluna, and has a variety of powers on hand in order to do so. He was created by The King. He is known to be the "Mind" of the group.

About[]

Octus is the latest android model developed by a group of Galaluna’s top scientists. A thinking organic machine, Octus is able to adapt to any situation. He was created and activated shortly before the events of the series began and was sent to earth along with Ilana and Lance to protect her.

In his original form he is an analytical observer, surveying, defining and recording data for further research and categorization. When Princess Ilana is threatened, Octus transitions into protective mode, utilizing a number of defensive tactics including generating holograms, piercing sonic disruptions and blinding light. When the threat exceeds Octus’ individual abilities he is able to unite with Lance and Ilana and unlock the power of the TITAN.

In an effort to assimilate on Earth, Octus creates a hologram and adopts the persona of a teenage boy named Newton, after scientific genius Isaac Newton. Additionally, Octus assumes the role of parental unit for Ilana and Lance. Creating another hologram, this time in the form of an older gentleman resembling Ilana and Lance, “Dad” is initially intended to function as a ruse for parent-teacher conferences, career days and other events necessitating parental participation. As they spend more time on Earth, Dad becomes more and more like a real father breaking up fights, consoling and helping Lance and Ilana to see things from a different perspective. As Newton, he becomes more and more interested in what makes these human teenagers tick.

History[]

In the episode Family Crisis, Octus is drained by a electrical creature, and dies to the absorption of the creature Solomon himself said that "everything the creature absorbs seems to be permanently dead." This seemed to be true as none of Lance's attempts to revive Octus had any success. However, in the episode A New Beginning Octus was mysteriously reactivated by Solomon's mysterious Superior.

Personality[]

Octus[]

Octus

Octus is a highly intelligent robot that enjoys Earth and its customs. He finds Earth very interesting due to the fact that he is from a different planet.

The smallest things could interest him such as pimples on a person's face, to the use of teenage slang. On the battlefield, Octus can be the most dependable, using brains and skills to defeat his enemies, making him a very important addition to the group. Although Octus was initially intended to help Ilana and Lance assimilate on Earth, things quickly change the more he bonds with them and takes an interest in the world around him. While he has always been willing to do what he could to help in a situation through his advanced technology, Octus becomes agitated and annoyed the more Ilana and Lance view him as just a robot who should only be considered as useful equipment during certain situations and regarded as someone who is simply incapable of feeling emotions, let alone should be considered a living being like them. Octus becomes confused by the new emotions he feels and wonders if being surrounded by others has affected him as he even begins to hold doubt in his abilities the more he makes a mistake, which he believes should not occur to him as such flaws are only common for humans and other living beings. However, the more he acknowledges his flaws, the more he questions whether he should truly be considered just a robot. Eventually, Octus comes to terms with the fact that he is neither a robot or a human, but a living being of his own. As Ilana and Lance quickly realize that Octus is a living being of his own with his own emotions, they become more considerate towards him and treat him fairly, something he greatly appreciates. Despite his mission originally intended for him to co-operate with Lance to help protect Ilana, he becomes very protective of the two, no longer viewing them as just members of a mission, but as his real family. Octus is typically very honest and will not be quick to judge others, and although he is willing to keep some secrets , such as Lance's activity as the "Phantom Ninja", he is not very good at hiding things if someone he is close to begins to question him, even more so with Kimmy as she becomes suspicious of his repeated disappearances. Octus enjoys socializing with others if given the chance, his unique abilities allow him to quickly adapt and act impressively as he participates in simple bonding activities with other peers. Octus will often times take others words literally, not understanding when someone is attempting to cause conflict with him or insult him, but results in him being in a position where his lack of understanding causes him to respond to others in a proper manner which others consider a clever way of talking back to jerks like Brandon Chase. Octus is very kind towards others but will not hesitate to stand his ground in order to not be taken advantage of. As octus continues living on Earth, he finds enjoyment in simple things such as dancing, eating popsicles, repairing cars, watching T.V. etc. Although he is strict when needed, he develops a sense of humor, finding it funny that his attempts to evade someone like Steve lead to him walking into the girls locker room.

Newton[]

Newton

Newton is a humanoid hologram that Octus uses for the appearance of a high school student. To be more specific, a nerd. With this disguise, Octus acts like a regular high school teenager who is very smart by human standards, though he limits his true advanced intelligence in order to hide his alien origins. In Lessons in Love, his intelligence becomes so well known throughout the school that he becomes Kimmy's tutor, something that was initially against his will but to which he later commits to. His kind and supportive nature inevitably results in Kimmy falling in love with him, while he in turn reciprocates the feeling, the two become a couple near the end. Though his ongoing curiosity of Earth led some to view him as strange and obscure, many of his peers, especially Kimmy, quickly find his unique personality charming and interesting. Newtons relationship with Kimmy ultimately becomes a major factor in him developing and experiencing new feelings, making him question his existence and how he is actually his own person. However, the more Newton develops meaningful relationships with others, the more he understands the true impact his secrets can have on the people he cares about as he continues to deceive them, making him feel a sense of great disappointment in himself.

In Shaman of Fear, he’s shown to have many friends on a contacts list. Other than Lance, Ilana, and Barb, who these people are is unknown. In the episode "the Ballad of Scary Mary", he gains the attention of other school peers, possibly due to his friendship with Meat or with Kimmy convincing others to give him a chance as he is genuinely a cool guy regardless of not fitting into the typical popularity standards. Though initially perceived as a nerd, Newton shows a more fun loving side the more he interacts with others.

Newton is related in some way to the Lunis Family but it is not stated what his position in the family is, however, given his greater responsibility to ensure Lance and Ilana get along, it is established he is the oldest sibling and big brother of the two. In the event he detects danger during times when he is in school or surrounded by other peers, he primarily becomes the center of an excuse in order to rally with Ilana and Lance to fight the threat. Often times, he will simply say they must leave because of a "family" matter or a bathroom break he cannot avoid. Although his secrecy inevitably puts a great strain on his meaningful relationship with Kimmy, Newton is determined to apologize but is saddened when Kimmy decides to break up with him, making him realizes his excuses have hurt the people he has grown to care for. When Newton goes missing for over two weeks, Meat and Kimmy Mysner both look for him at the Lunis's home in A New Beginning, worried about him and his family's sudden disappearance. After he is revived through the efforts of G3, Newton becomes the primary image Octus uses to display himself when talking to Lance and Ilana during titan form, revealing that Octus is most comfortable identifying himself as Newton.

Mr. Lunis[]

Vlcsnap-00134

Mr. Lunis

Mr. Lunis is Octus's fatherly appearance, giving him the title as Ilana and Lance's father. He drives them to school and cooks for them while maintaining the façade that they are a simple family in the suburbs. Though he tries to maintain a low profile, his existence within the suburbs becomes well known the more Barbara talks about him to other neighbors. As Octus adapts to his father-like personality, he finds a great sense of joy in old music, educational cartoons, cooking and simple gifts. While Octus favors his Newton image, he additionally finds that the mature personality of his fatherly image better suits him, ultimately considering himself as someone who is simply an old soul.

Powers and Abilities[]

RunOctus

Octus uses various hard-light holograms to blend in with the people of Earth. One of them is Newton, which Octus uses whenever he's in school with Lance and Ilana. Named after the genius Sir Issac Newton, Newton's nerdy look fits with his extraordinary knowledge (which pushes him into the lower ranks of the High School hierarchy). Another is unnamed, but acts as a "father" for Lance and Ilana, who pose as brother and sister, outside of Sherman High. Barb has shown a romantic attraction to this form, and while Octus admires some of her talents he doesn’t return her feelings. He’s puzzled and fascinated by Earth's cultural customs, and is quiet and soft-spoken. He’s also apparently able to consume food, particularly enjoying popsicles (It’s possible that he can break down these foods and convert them into fuel).

Octus can bend his body into different forms and is bullet-proof. He also possesses super-speed in both flight and on foot, which he appears not to have had until Shaman of Fear, when Lance and Ilana were in trouble, but weren’t close to him.

In the episode The Fortress of Deception, much of Octus's abilities are shown more usefully. While being ambushed by the G3 agency, Octus was shown to ram through a large amount of them without any sign of struggle. His super speed also comes in handy due to the fact that he can run at incredible speed.

Also, it has been seen that Octus can shoot electric pulses out of his hands, creating large arcs of electricity to attack enemies. He also possesses a form of molecular furnace, able to turn rudimentary items into something useful. He uses this feature in the episode "A Family Crisis" to create devices that form an electromagnetic field that can contain the Electric Entity monster.

Sym-Bionic Titan[]

See Also: Sym-Bionic Titan (mech)

Octus can also form Titan along with Lance and Ilana. Since he, himself, is a robot, he can form into Titan without transformation. He’s the mind of the robot, fitting the Galalunian proverb. As shown in The Steel Foe, it shows that Octus' death had taken an enormously large toll on Lance and Ilana and the two aren't able to fight with just the Manus and Corus.

Relationships[]

Ilana[]

Octus was primarily assigned the task of protecting Ilana as well as assimilating her to life on Earth. Just like Ilana, Octus becomes fascinated and surprised by the earthlings way of life, but perplexed by the social hierarchy which has ranked him, an intellectual, and Ilana, a kind hearted individual, on the lowest level of the schools social ranks, being referred to as "Doofus" to mark their new identities in school. Despite their ongoing duty to evade the Mutraddi, Octus ultimately agrees with Ilana that the best way for them to protect themselves, is by blending in and learning to be as normal as the other earthlings. However, their attempts at doing so are often short lived the more they attempt to unify students for a common cause or allow their curiosity and personality to act in ways others would consider as weird. Despite initially meant to be Ilana's protector, Octus additionally acts as a father figure to help Ilana get along with Lance, as well as a brother figure so Ilana has someone to confide in. Aside from enjoying each others company, Octus shares similar interests with Ilana, such as enjoying the show "High School Heights", and being willing to engage in earth customs to better learn how to socialize with others. Octus admires Ilana's kind nature and willingness to help others, however, as Octus realizes that he is not just some robot and is a living being of his own, he begins to feel a sense of frustration when Ilana states he is just a robot who is unable to feel true emotions and is unable to properly perceive the world the same way she does, even more so when he discovers that Ilana does not believe he will ever truly love Kimmy. Although Octus does eventually help Ilana realize that he is a living being of his own and appreciates her committing to treating him fairly, he was not yet made aware of the true impact he has had on her until "A Family Crisis", when he discovers that Ilana considers him and Lance as part of her family and is fearful of loosing him to the mysterious creature. Happy to know just how much he truly matters to his new family, Octus becomes that much more determined to protect Ilana now that he has adopted their roles as siblings rather than just viewing each other as just members of a mission.

Lance[]

Octus was primarily assigned to help Lance protect Ilana and help him assimilate to Earth. Despite knowing Lance is a skilled fighter and respected by the King to be left with the task of protecting Ilana, Octus quickly realizes that Lance's risky behavior and insubordination has become a primary risk to their safety on Earth. As Octus makes the decision to portray the three of them as a family, Octus quickly takes on the role of a father figure for Lance to not only help him get along with Ilana, but also be strict enough to inform him of the true consequences of his actions if he is not careful about what he does on Earth. Aside from acting as a father figure, Octus additionally takes on the role of a big brother for Lance to bond with and confide in. Because of his non judgmental personality, Octus is willing to understand Lance's struggles and behaviors, allowing Lance to not only appreciate his honesty, but also feel comfortable enough to open up about his vulnerabilities to him. During their time together, Octus develops a sense of respect for Lance's commitment to fight for what's right as well as his efforts to make up for his behavior and actions. During their time on Earth, Octus develops similar interests with Lance, becoming fond of cars and the process of building them together, as well as finding a form of expression through art. Octus takes interest in Lance's behavior and appearance causing such a positive response from the students at school, but encourages him to try to socialize with others despite his anti-social tendencies. Octus usually gets along well with Lance, but becomes frustrated with his views of him being just a robot who is incapable of feeling emotions and experiencing the world in the same way other living beings can. Although Octus does eventually help Lance realize that he is a living being of his own and appreciates his commitment to treating him fairly, he was not yet made aware of the true impact he has had on him until "A Family Crisis". Upon realizing just how much they have adopted their family roles, Octus becomes determined to protect Lance even at the risk of his own life at the hands of the mysterious creature. After he is "killed" by the mysterious creature, Octus is unaware of the desperate efforts Lance goes through to try and revive him, spending weeks attempting to make sense of his machinery and even being willing to break into Steel's base to obtain a strong enough power source to try and revive him. Upon being revived in "A New Beginning" Octus is overjoyed to be reunited with Lance and Ilana.

Kimmy[]

The lead cheerleader from Sherman High School. Octus does not officially interact with Kimmy until "Lessons in Love". Octus was initially intimidated by Kimmy after bumping into her and accidentally causing her to spill her drink on her clothes. After failing to force him to do her redo test as compensation, Kimmy confuses Octus when she takes up his offer to help her finish the test, but at his house. Octus tutors Kimmy in his "Newton" form, to help her get a passing grade in order to stay in the cheerleading squad, but grows frustrated over Kimmy's unwillingness to do the work herself and instead continuously asks him to do the test for her - even doing a dance in a final attempt to seduce him, but was to no avail as Newton refuses to be taken advantage of. Eventually Newton begins to see Kimmy's true side as she breaks into tears, telling him that she's can't do it because "everyone has a role in life" and hers was to be pretty and stupid. After seeing this display of emotion, Newton convinces her that she doesn't have to live up to standards society has put on her, but instead to apply herself and be willing to learn from her mistakes and use what she had learned to better solve a problem, then everything would be clear. Touched by his words, Kimmy becomes more willing to cooperate with Newton, the two no longer viewing each other through frustration but instead through a mutual sense of understanding. As Newton continues aiding her through the test and helps her discover her true intellectual potential, Newton is surprised by Kimmy's sudden change in behavior as she becomes more affectionate, not yet realizing that she has developed feelings for him but is additionally confused by his own feelings as he realizes Kimmy's attempts to get closer to him. The two share a kiss at the end of the episode before Kimmy leaves, after that, the two form a relationship, with Octus/Newton returning the feelings for Kimmy. Octus becomes defensive and upset over Lance and Ilana feeling skeptical about the relationship, saying Kimmy will most likely be hurt if she finds out he's a robot with no real feelings for her, but helps them understand that he is a living being of his own and that what he feels for Kimmy is real. As their relationship continues, Newton and Kimmy develop a stronger and healthy relationship, but complications soon arrive as Newton is left with no other choice but to lie to her on occasion so she does not discover his alien origins.

In Under the Three Moons , Newton gradually feels an overwhelming amount of new feelings as his relationship with Kimmy becomes strained. As his ongoing "bathroom" disappearances continue to intervene with important matters between them , which unbeknownst to her is really a cover for his alien activity, Newton finds himself desperate to make amends to someone else. Realizing that Kimmy is growing more and more suspicious of him keeping secrets from her, Newton grows a sense of disappointment in himself for failing to consider Kimmy's feelings and tries to make amends by fulfilling her perfect homecoming dance night. However, after being forced to once again leave her to fight another alien, right before the homecoming dance, Newton begins to feel the full extent of his decisions and how much he can truly hurt the people he cares for. At the end of the episode, Newton tries to apologize to Kimmy, but is saddened that she has decided to break up with him as his secretive nature proves to much for her to bare. Knowing fully well that Kimmy only wished to know the truth of what is truly going on in his life, but is restricted by the dangers he could place on her by revealing the truth, Newton is unable to say anything more to have her reconsider the breakup.

In "A Steel Foe", Newton is unaware that Kimmy grows terribly worried over what could have happened to him and his family as she notes his prolonged absence from school and sudden disappearance from his neighborhood, even blaming herself for the disappearance due to her stating she never wanted to see him again. Near the end of "A New Beginning", upon his revival, Octus discovers Kimmy has been attempting to message him for weeks and quickly replies, informing her that he has seen her messages and will return home soon, causing Kimmy to shed tears of joy, implying that the two still love each other.

Barbara[]

A woman from their block who regularly attempts to interact with them. Octus does not see Barbara as a threat, but is often times faced with the hassle of preventing her from potentially uncovering their alien origins during one of her abrupt visits. Octus does not perceive Barbara enough as a problem to take action against as she remains oblivious to the things she has seen, such as assuming his alien technology is just décor. Despite realizing that Barbara is at times simply attempting to be just a good neighbor, he is unaware of her crush on his "dad" program and is often times confused by her attempts to flirt with him and perceive any action he does as an attempt to flirt back, regardless of him never intending to do so.

Meat[]

A simple-minded jock that befriends Octus in his Newton form during "Showdown at Sherman High". Newton was a little frustrated by Meats childish behavior, but comes to understand that although Meat is not very smart about the things he says and does, he has a kind heart none the less and appreciates his sincere attempts to apologize for his interruptive behavior. While Meat grows to greatly respect Newton and tends to be around him a lot, Newton does not mind his company and at times enjoys it as they do simple activities together such as engaging in a burping contests and performing a robot dance at the Scary Mary party with others of their school.

Steve[]

A young military soldier who works for general Steel. Octus encounters Steve in the middle of the school hallway but is not yet aware of his attempts to pursue the identity of Titan until Ilana takes note of his suspicious actions. Octus finds humor in evading him and tricking him around the school.

Solomon[]

The leader of G3. Although Octus was unaware of Solomon actively spying on their lives on earth, he was suspicious about someone watching them. When Solomon proceeded with his plans to take Ilana and Lance, Octus attempted to fight off Solomon but was outmaneuvered and evaded. Octus had viewed Solomon as a threat for kidnapping Ilana and Lance but was quick to understand that despite his methods, Solomon's only intention was to acquire answers. Although he agreed with Lance's reasoning to remain unwilling to trust Solomon, Octus also agrees with Ilana's reasoning to help Solomon in "A Family Crisis" in order to convince him they are not a threat to him or earth. After Octus is "killed" by the mysterious creature, he is unaware of Solomon's efforts to aid Ilana and Lance throughout their time without him. After he is revived through the efforts of the G3, Octus is now willing to view Solomon as an ally.

Steel[]

A high-ranking General in charge of many of the U.S. armed forces. Octus is fully aware of Steel's intention to find them and is quick to do whatever he can to evade his suspicions. Despite knowing Steel is considered one of Earth's defenders, Octus is not above considering him a threat given he is willing to destroy them on sight and without being reasoned with. Although Steel has attempted to do nothing but harm them, Octus is still willing to help save him from the alien threats that arrive to earth.

Disenfranchised Band[]

A small band comprised of three members. Although Octus is not particularly interested in them, he is willing to show support to Lance in joining their band. After Lance is kicked out of the band, he finds no complaint in Ilana's suggestion to start their own band, regardless of Lance's displeasure.

Mike Chan[]

An illegal street racer who regularly has a run in with the law enforcement. Octus takes note of Mike's high testosterone levels, viewing him as aggressive and eager to cause issues for Lance. Octus does not take action against Mike given he is inferior in strength and intelligence and holds no real threat to their secrets while on Earth. Octus primarily leaves Lance to deal with Mike and trusts that Lance has learned not to be careless with Mike's attempts to cause conflict. As Octus watches on as Mike is arrested, he is happy to know that Mike will now pay for his crimes and will no longer pose as an annoyance to them.

Tashy 497 (Tarax, Mushy, 497)[]

A small docile alien. Octus takes an interest in the small creature and quickly bonds with it as he documents its features and analyzes its unique characteristics, naming it 497 as the latest addition to his data files of living creatures. However, Octus is quickly horrified upon discovering the true nature of 497's biology being comprised of unstable energy that could destroy all of Earth. Understanding it was the Mutraddi's original plan to kill 497 in a ship crash to activate his catastrophic abilities, he quickly informs Lance and Ilana, but much to his dismay, he additionally reveals there is no way for them to keep 497 without him being a threat to Earth, even more so as the Earth's atmosphere is killing 497. After Lance and Ilana ultimately agree to let 497 die in space, he silently mourns the loss of their family pet along with them. Later, Octus discovers that their little companion has become a new cosmic formation after his death. As a scientist permits him, Ilana and Octus to name the new formation, Octus immediately and excitedly says it should be 497. But after consoling Ilana, and Lance, he agrees to name him Tashi 497, a combination of all their names.

Trivia[]

  • Octus made a cameo appearance in the OK K.O.! Let's Be Heroes crossover special, Crossover Nexus, where he, along with Ilana, appeared as two of the Cartoon Network heroes that were summoned and defeated by Strike. Octus also appeared in his Newton disguise in the crossover.
